Usage of Idioms in Standardized Exams Like Gre, Gmat, toefl

Posted in TOEFL with tags , , , , on May 16, 2009 by mambococo

What is an Idiom?

An idiom is an expression (i.e. term or phrase) the meaning of which cannot be inferred from the dictionary definitions and the arrangement of its elements, but refers instead to a figurative meaning that is known only through conventional use. This explanation is an adaptation from wikipedia. What I am concerned about is the usage of idioms and a thorough understanding of their occurrence in study abroad qualifying examinations like GRE GMAT TOEFL and SAT. Most students who don’t have English as their native language face difficulties in the aforementioned exams due to the surprise elements like idioms .One obvious reason is that idioms are manners of communication which are natural to the native speakers of a particular language. You may have idioms for your native language and admittedly, in modern times it is in fact difficult to converse without idioms. The knowledge of these elements of speech doesn’t bother you most of the times because you use it in your native language. When a study abroad aspirant faces idioms in exam preparation it becomes cumbersome because most of the study abroad exams are in English and English has a vast range of idioms currently in use. However, most of the educational and testing services have a basic collection of idioms which they want to test or expect you to know. If you plan to take any exam like the GRE, GMAT, TOEFL you won’t face a lot of complex idiomatic expressions in the text or questions asked. I am providing a short list of idioms which helped me earn decent scores in my exams and still help me understand the content of speech of the people around me. I have realized that without knowing these most common expressions it is undoubtedly difficult to comprehend what others say in a study abroad program. Here is a list of idioms which will enhance your verbal and written communication skills in English, if you learn to accommodate them.

The Difference Between IELTS and TOEFL

Posted in TOEFL with tags , , , , on April 8, 2009 by mambococo

You have spent many hours learning English, whether for your work or school situation. Now you need to prove that you do, in fact, know the language as well as you need to for the program you are entering. How can you do this? You can prove your knowledge of the language by taking a test. Two of the most popular are the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). While these two tests have a similar goal – to show that you know English – they are different in many ways.

Difference in Intent

One difference in the two tests is in the intent. The main intent of the TOEFL is to determine whether or not the test taker can speak, read, understand, and write English well enough to attend college in an English-speaking program. The questions, reading material, and listening material are all designed on a college level.

While there is one version of the IELTS that is designed for college applicants, the Academic Version, the IELTS also comes in a General Training Version. This is used for those who are looking to head to an English-speaking country for work or immigration. Many companies who are looking to hire non-native English speakers need to know that their employees can speak and understand English, and they require a test to show this. Also, Australia and Canada require those who are immigrating to their countries to pass the test as part of their citizenship requirements.

Difference in Focus

Another difference between the two tests is the focus. The TOEFL is designed for North American speakers and hearers. The spoken portions are read by native North American speakers. The questions of form and style are based on North American English. On the other hand, the IELTS is designed to fit a variety of accents and situations. The writing styles and accents incorporated into the test are designed to mimic the accent and style of many different countries. This makes this test ideal for those who are looking to test their ability to speak and read English, but do not necessarily need to speak and read North American English.

The Structure of the IELTS

Candidates who are taking the IELTS are required to complete four modules. These are speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Once complete, the applicant will receive a band, or score, which will be displayed on the IELTS Test Report Form. The highest possible score is a 9 band score, which means the individual is completely competent in all tested areas.

The Listening and Speaking Modules are the same for both the academic and general versions of the exam, but the Reading and Writing Modules are not. The test takes 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete. The Listening, Reading, and Writing Modules must be completed in that order on the same day without a break. The Speaking Module can be completed within a week prior to or following the written portion of the test.

The Structure of the TOEFL

The TOEFL can be taken online or at a testing center. When taken online, the applicant has four hours to complete the Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing sections of the test. Each section has its own time limit. The paper-based test is similar in structure. However, it has a structure and written expression section rather than a speaking section. These test similar skills, just in a different format.

The Internet based version has a highest possible score of 120 and a lowest possible score of 0. The paper version is scored in a range between 310 and 577, with each section scored separately, but the writing section not included in the final score.

While the TOEFL and the IELTS have significant differences, both are good ways to judge whether or not an English speaker truly knows the language. If you are trying to decide which test to take, contact the school or company with which you are applying to see which test they prefer.

Tips To Learn English

Posted in TOEFL with tags , , , , on March 14, 2009 by mambococo

Do you have any plan to pursue your further education abroad? Will you need English for your career or your education? If so, you may wish to investigate your options for learning, or improving, your English skills.

The TOEFL Test: TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language) is a test used by many colleges, universities, government agencies and exchange and scholarship programs in the US, UK and Canada as a means of evaluating the language skills of a person whose first language is not English.

You can find TOEFL study guides easily online with other recommended resources listed. You may be able to access some of the sample tests and prepare with personal study. Or you may look for a class with an instructor to help you prepare for the test.

ESL Classes: ESL classes are a common means for students to learn English with group of classmates. These can be in the form of an evening class with various individuals attending or may be part of a college program during the day.

The course length and the topics covered will differ from country to country and school to school. Some summer programs are geared for international students to gain a basic grasp of the language before starting studies in English taught classes of the college or university.

Since the standards of passing a course, or the course material itself, will vary drastically, some students may feel that the language skills gained upon completing the course does not equip them to handle school work or social interactions adequately.

Some schools offer students and alternative of home-stay programs for students. Home-stay programs benefit the student by placing them for several weeks or months with a host family that speaks English. The student is then able to immerse him or herself in the culture and social speaking of the English country they are living in. There are also online ESL programs that may be suitable for distance education, especially if programs are not readily available in your area.

Private Tutors: Another popular method of learning English is with private tutors. The materials and methods used by ESL tutors will vary greatly and it is important to establish what material will be used and to feel comfortable with the tutor. Asking friends or other students for references can be helpful in finding a good tutor.

A combination of these English learning methods will be effective as well. You can take a summer course while staying with a home-stay host family and then arranging for private tutoring during the school year. Making an effort to use your new language skills regularly in social situations will improve your progress regardless of the program or course you are using.

TOEFL An Essential Tool For Overseas Education

Posted in TOEFL with tags , , , , on February 20, 2009 by mambococo

TOEFL(Test Of English as a Foreign Language) is conducting to assess the English fluency of the students from non-English speaking countries to get admission in the foreign universities. The test evaluates the reading, writing, listening and speaking abilities of the test-taker.

The TOEFL exam is relied by over 6000 universities, colleges, business and professional schools of around 140 countries. The test is conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which is a registered trademark for the test administered since 1964. It keeps the provision of sending the test scores to four universities of the student’s choice. In India, the fee for TOEFL test is US$165, which includes the cost of the score report and four score recipient universities cost.

TOEFL-iBT for Indian Students:

TOEFL-iBT (Internet Based Test) was launched in the year 2005 and was commenced from 2006 in India. It is intended to restore the precious two versions of the test and is gradually becoming available worldwide. In India, TOEFL is offered as an Internet-based Test, which is a linear and not a computer adaptive test. Here the test takers will answer all the questions from the same range of difficulty, rather than receiving questions based on their ability levels.

In a TOEFL iBT, students have to take an online test directly from the ETS test centers. There will be approximately 45 test sessions a year, usually on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. TOEFL-iBT is an integration of assessing four different skills for English language – reading, writing, listening and speaking.

To succeed in this new format, students need to be good note takers as they will be required to read passages and then listen to lectures or long conversations in order to respond either orally or by writing to questions, usually about how the written material relates to the listening material. The language skills of gist, details, inferences, vocabulary, reference, and insertion are still tested along with the new skills of paraphrasing and determining overall organization and purpose. The addition of these new skills, along with the integration of the sections, makes the TOEFL-iBT a more valid evaluation of a student’s real-life language skills and their ability to succeed in a real academic environment.

Escape the Standardized Exam Gre, Gmat, toefl and Get a College Degree

Posted in TOEFL with tags , , , , on February 6, 2009 by mambococo

I have always wondered about the relevance of GRE/ GMAT / SAT/ IELTS. These exams have their own flaws and may be perceived as regressive patterns of testing the knowledge, aptitude and analytical abilities of a graduate student. I am in no which way an expert, scholar or authority who can strongly detest the usage of the aforementioned exams in selection criteria of students for a study abroad program. The bottom line is that these exams are bridges across global schools which facilitate the selection of deserving students.

In my honest opinion exams like GRE are a matter of hard work and luck; both the determinants sharing the credit of your success equally. However, at times you may have a bad day or may be you are ill while you appeared for the exams. The results obviously are skewed towards the lower percentiles. Now- a- days some institutions have been realistic enough to understand that the undergraduate GPA, work experience and a good resume, compounded with a professional letter of intent (for the desired study program) actually decide the capability of a student rather than the scores of standardized exams like GRE. The list of programs which may help you earn a MBA degree without GRE/ GMAT is given below. These institutions are in no which way associated with my professional or academic interests. As a matter of fact there are a growing number of students who have exceptional work experience and great academic record but unfortunately were not able to perform on the standardized exams. Admittedly we are witnessing a boom in the number of students participating in study abroad programs and responding to this boom a great number of schools all over the world have relaxed the admission criterion. USA harbors these institutions which would give preference to your overall body of work rather than the scores on standardized exams.
